Isn’t it strange how two people can see the same thing and interpret it different ways?
My boss has a clock on his wall. Every number has been replaced by the word “Now.”
On one particularly harried day when I was pressuring myself to do many things, I expressed irritation that he had that clock on his wall. “Why would you choose to hang something like that?”
“What do you mean?” He asked, honestly confused.
“I feel so much pressure as it is and then I look at that clock and it’s screaming – Now! Now! Now! That’s already how I feel inside, as if everything must be done NOW!”
My boss smiled and leaned back in his chair. “Lori, that clock means exactly the opposite. It’s a reminder that all the time we have is now, so be in the now, appreciate the now, be present in the now. You’re living in the next moment. Maybe from now on you can start hearing the clock calling you back to the Now.”
Wow.
Now.
Jesus was into the “Now.” On his way to healing the daughter of one of the leaders of the synagogue, a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years touched his cloak. Though the crowd pressed into him and the important man’s family awaited Jesus’ arrival, He stopped in the midst of it all to locate her and speak with her.
You can hear the disciples’ irritation when Jesus asks, “Who touched me?”
“Who touched you? Are you kidding? Everyone’s touching you. Come on. This important man is waiting. He has influence. He can promote you. This could change everything. Why are you stopping here? We need to keep moving.” (My loose translation of Mark 5)
The disciples were living in the next moment.
Jesus lived now.
Jesus still lives now.
If you want to be with Jesus, you must be here NOW.
You’re ready to follow Him anywhere? Try joining Him in the Now.
It may be the hardest journey you’ll ever make. But that’s where Jesus is, loved ones, He is here. Now.
The Conversation
Wow. I was going where you were with the clock thing. But so much better a reminder to reckon the now. Thanks, Lori
That really got me thinking. I can really relate to it. I wish I had that clock on my wall.
