Why Disturber of Hobbits?

I identify with the hobbits of Lord of the Rings who love comfort, routine, and timely meals. I also, though, identify with Bilbo and Frodo who were drafted into adventure and found it to be addictive and exciting. I believe Christians can become too comfortable and we not only need to be disturbed into Jesus adventures, we benefit from them.

Background:

When I was still a young child, I responded to an altar call during a televised Billy Graham Crusade. I “went forward” in front of our black-and-white television, knelt down as they sang, “Just as I am” and began a relationship with Jesus Christ. I have been a Jesus lover since that day and will enjoy Him for eternity.

Growing up: I grew up much like every other kid in the sixties and seventies learning who I was against a backdrop of social change and family turmoil. There were a myriad of places a kid could turn to find herself in those days. Providentially, I turned to Jesus. I spent hours alone riding my bike around my small, rural town with a Bible, a hymnal, and a notebook in the wicker basket attached to the handlebars. While others were tuning in and dropping out, I was studying God’s word and learning to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. So, I was a totally unpopular, chubby, smart, Jesus freak, geek girl but it worked out well for me in the end.

What I did when I grew up: I studied psychology and biblical Studies at Barrington College  (a small Christian college in RI, now merged with Gordon College in MA).  I served the Lord for one summer missions trip in Japan where it was widely agreed that God was NOT calling me into foreign missions.  I still tried hard to leave Rhode Island, but the Lord had other plans.

I worked for years at runaway shelters and group homes until I married Rob. Then, I stayed home to raise free-range Christian children. God blessed me with two: Zack and Hannah. We homeschooled them through high school and both are young adults. Hannah married a wonderful young man we love named Andrew, they have two sons, Sam and Gideon. She’s a former nanny, now stay-at-home mom/homesteader, he’s a chef who works for an electrical contractor (career shift), and they’re raising (besides little “Chief” and Gideon) two rescue dogs, many goats, chickens, pigs, and rabbits.

Zack is an up-and-coming leader in the lumber industry. He’s married to the lovely Jessica (who also works in lumber) who brings with her two lively teens we’ve been overjoyed to call grandsons since they were 5 and 7, Logan and Christian. Recently, Zack and Jess added a little guy named, Wade Mark Arthur to our family and we have the joy of sharing a house with this lively crew!

Rob and I have been married over 36 years. He’s my soul mate although that doesn’t necessarily play out as peacefully and harmoniously on a daily basis as you would think. He’s a craftsman and self-employed carpenter. I write, speak, and coach full-time.

While I was homeschooling, I also taught women’s church and community Bible studies, led youth groups and taught high school Sunday school. I played guitar on worship teams and earned a black belt in karate while leading a Bible study for black belt women. For 10 years, I worked a day job as a coach facilitator in a program designed for struggling families. I live across the street from where I grew up in a home my husband is redeeming from condemnation. I’m adapting to mothering adults. My husband and I are active in our small town church.
