Batman’s Utility Belt and Jesus

Subscribe to new posts
Ever have a big “aha” moment over something you’ve pondered for years?
I’m probably alone with this one but
let’s find out.
Many times, I’ve read the verses in Ephesians 6 about the armor of God
and each morning  I’ve “put it on.”
For me, this consists of running through each piece in my mind
and committing to it –
the helmet of salvation
the breastplate of righteousness
the belt of truth
feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace
the sword of the word of the spirit of God
the shield of faith.
Last year, I had an epiphany about the shield of faith
You can read about it here:
or here:
I guess this time
it’s a revelation about truth.
I’ve always wondered why truth was a belt.
I’m not much for belts.
Belts these days seem like silly, optional accessories –
that’s a scary metaphor about modern times, isn’t it-
modern belts seem so unnecessary
I didn’t get the connection between belts and truth.
But then, my son arrived home from work on Friday
and placed his tool belt on the kitchen floor
aahhhh, I thought, a tool belt
then, I noticed he was wearing his Batman belt buckle
and the gears began to turn.
At one point in history, belts were utilitarian.
The belt of a Roman soldier secured his weapons – a sword, a dagger, maybe a whip.
It also designated his rank and
the wider ones offered a measure of protection
in battle.
We live in battle
and deception is the weapon most often used against us
so it would follow that our weapons must all be secured by truth
and truth offers us a generous measure of protection.
Tool belts for tradesmen carry the essential items of their craft – hammers, measures, knives.
Electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and all manner of people who work with their hands
depend on their tool belts to carry what they require to do the work.
Truth is a key tool for building the kingdom.
Deception is a sledgehammer, a wrecking ball, a box of TNT
but the tools of truth can build fortresses that no weapon of destruction can destroy.
So, that leads me to the other users of utilitarian belts –
superheroes.
Batman has a belt
with all kinds of necessary gadgets –
grappling hooks,
antidotes to poisons,
gas pellets,
recorders,
Batcuffs,
first aid
and truth is like that.
Truth helps us find a handhold in sticky situations.
Truth is the antidote to every venomous lies.
Truth can rebuff and bind the enemy.
Truth heals, helps, and delivers
and it confuses the bad guys
every time.
Tomorrow, when I put on the belt of truth,
I will do it with renewed zeal.
I know I’m a little crazy
my God uses His utility belt of truth
to reach me in a hundred different ways.
Yesterday he used my son’s tool belt and Batman.
Who knows what’s in store for tomorrow?  It’s a true cliffhanger.
Tune in next time – same Bat-blog, same Bat-truth
