  • Satan Runs a Numbers Game but We Don’t Have to Play
Posted on Monday, October 24th, 2016 | Filed under Blog | Tagged: grace, mercy, numbers, redemption, Satan, word problems

Satan doesn’t wear red silk pajamas and horns, nor does he carry a pitchfork. No, Satan wears a suit from Brooks Brothers, horn-rimmed glasses, a visor, and he comes at you armed with an adding machine. See, Satan runs a backroom numbers game and he’s always showing up to check your tally. How much do …[ read more ]

Posted on Saturday, November 7th, 2015 | Filed under Blog | Tagged: accountability, Bono, gospel, grace, holding out hope, Jesus on the cross, Jonah, judgement, repentance, seeking revenge, telling the whole truth, U2, wanting revenge

I want revenge. Reprisal. Accountability. Comeuppance. Answerability. Retribution. It’s hard for me to admit that but it’s true. If I’ve chosen to follow the rules, made sacrifices to be obedient, then I want those who haven’t been obedient to suffer the consequences. I don’t like people getting away with stuff. I believe in rules, standards, …[ read more ]

A man sees another man outside in the cold with no shoes. He buys the man a pair of boots. Someone witnesses this act of kindness and then everything gets a little strange. As I followed this story last December, I realized how much I am like the man with no boots. Jesus came and …[ read more ]

Wow. I get it now. Ever have a moment like that? Just, wow. For years, more than I care to number I’ve encountered wave after wave after relentless wave of trial. Ironically, writers are advised to do that to our main characters, “make them suffer,” “when things are bad, make them worse,” “increase the conflict” …[ read more ]

  • The Gospel of Gotcha
Posted on Saturday, March 16th, 2013 | Filed under Blog | Tagged: Bishop Myriel, caught in sin, expose, forgiveness, gotcha, grace, Jean Valjean, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo

My kid brother enjoyed torturing me. It wasn’t hard to do. Two of his favorite methods of torture were to hide places in the house and jump out at me as I walked past (I was a nervous kid right out of the gate) or sneak up to the windows after school and try to …[ read more ]

Lori, Our Lord never ceases to amaze.. you have succeeded in disturbing this Hobbit! I have been struggling with spiritual apathy and indifference recently and reading your witty, convicting, engaging, infuriating writings has helped me to realize that I am in good company. They have also given me the kick-start I need to get off my laurels! Keep looking up..keep going on for the Lord dear sister-in-Christ!
